Nurse-to-patient ratios.

چکیده
ply of nurses and better track and disseminate information on patient outcomes and nurse workloads. While there is much debate about the pros and cons of these alternatives, participants at the 25th Massachusetts Health Policy Forum generally agreed on the following points: • The number of staff nurses and their skill play a critical role in patient outcomes across a range of conditions in the hospital setting. • Patient outcomes depend not only on the kind and severity of patients’ illnesses, but also on the mix of nurses, doctors, and auxiliary personnel, and on the work environment or culture of the hospital. • The nursing shortage in the state and nation presents challenges for hospitals in changing the number and mix of staff nurses. • It is questionable whether research will ever be able to show the optimal nurseto-patient ratio. • Enforcement of any nurse staffing reform will be challenging, as the usual penalties for noncompliance, such as fines, could have a detrimental effect on access to care. • Regardless of the path that nurse staffing reform takes, the government, hospitals, nurses, doctors, insurance companies, and patients must put aside their differences and work together to make the reform successful.

The results of several studies show the relationship between the ratio of nurses/patients with quality of care and patient outcomes (1-3). This means that less the ratio, more expected adverse outcomes for patients. These findings have led some institutions to establish mandated nurse-patient ratios (4). Establishing standard ratios could potentially improve patients' outcomes such as patient...
متن کاملImproving nurse-to-patient staffing ratios as a cost-effective safety intervention.

متن کاملImpact of California mandated acute care hospital nurse staffing ratios: a literature synthesis.

The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) recognizes the need for adequate nurse-staffing levels to ensure the quality of patient care delivered in hospitals and health systems throughout our nation. متن کاملNurse-patient ratios as a patient safety strategy: a systematic review.
A small percentage of patients die during hospitalization or shortly thereafter, and it is widely believed that more or better nursing care could prevent some of these deaths. The author systematically reviewed the evidence about nurse staffing ratios and in-hospital death through September 2012. From 550 titles, 87 articles were reviewed and 15 new studies that augmented the 2 existing reviews...
